Housed in a lovingly restored Victorian stable block with nearly 200 years of history, it’s where family, community, and a passion for exceptional food come together. We’re proud to share this special place with you.
The History of Ardallan
Originally built in 1847 by Thomas Gallon, a Victorian paper manufacturer, Ardallan was the very first home on Holly Hill, designed to overlook his factories near Felling Shore. Back then, it was known as Holly Hill House and remained in the Gallon family until 1913, when it was sold to Patrick and Agatha Bennett. Agatha, originally from County Down in Northern Ireland, renamed the house “Ardallan” after a beloved landmark from her homeland.
The Bennetts called Ardallan home for nearly 100 years, with the house becoming a haven for their nine children. During the Second World War, its cellar served as an air raid shelter, providing refuge for locals. In fact, one visitor shared a story about her mother tasting her first orange while hiding here from the Luftwaffe.
You’ll still find echoes of Ardallan’s past in the black-and-white photograph by our main entrance, showing the Bennett family in the 1940s, gathered in the front garden. Locals may even remember Sheila Bennett, a schoolteacher deeply loved in the Felling community, who is pictured in the front row.
After changing hands a few times, Ardallan became our family home in 2020. We’re proud to be only the fourth family to live here since it was built. In 2022, we opened Ardallan Kitchen, transforming the Victorian stables into a light, welcoming space where we celebrate fresh, seasonal flavours and bring our community together over delicious food.
